I was thinking today that the name Angus is pretty funny. Mike disagrees, he likes Bulbous. These are the kinds of things you talk about after driving in the same car together for about 40 hours straight.
Today was a chill day. Breakfast and Internet. Nap. Stroll down Avenida Quinta (5th Ave., the main drag in Playa) and then dinner.
It’s common in Mexico to see children running around asking tourist for money and this night was no different. What was different was the way that they went about it. Since it was so close to the holidays, groups of two or three wreath-wielding kids were going table to table singing Mexican Christmas carols. First a pair of two really cute little girls approached the table, sang a pretty good rendition of Jingle Bells in Spanish and then politely asked for some money. I was glad to give them a couple of bucks. The next group of kids wasn’t quite as professional. They were two girls and a boy, the oldest no older than 12. They rolled up from the street and the oldest of the girls went up to the table next to us and started to sing. In the middle of her performance her giggling little brother snuck up and stuck his finger in her ear. She whipped around and started slapping him all over his head. She ran away without collecting her tip, following him all around the restaurant crazy slap style. He finally escaped and immeadiately ran up to his table. He was the funniest looking little Mexican kid: floppy ears, saggy cheeks, crossed eyes and a shirt stained with what looked like day old mole. Before he even caught his breath he burst into song. Let me say, he definitely no Enrique Iglesias. Technique – Terrible! He was in such a hurry to get through the song that he was unintelligible.
The last syllable of the song blended immeadiately into “DINERO!” as he cocked his head, looked right at as and shoved a rusty can under my nose. The fact that he was so bold with his demand to be compensated for such a shitty performance had Mike and I laughing out loud. The little stained shirt, cross eyed chub ball Mexican kid made our night!
