Al Sur

Drove most of the morning and into the afternoon. We made a stop on 145 between Veracruz and Villahermosa. This is probably the nicest stretch of road on the whole drive, a four lane (wow!) highway that cuts through never-ending sugarcane fields. One of the highlights of the drive is stopping on the highway at one of the many make shift stands and buying a cold jug of fresh pineapple juice and a bag of pina rebanada covered in chili powder.
Spent the night in Palenque at Maya Bell Campground. Cleaned up and went to El Panchon for dinner. It was nice to chill for the night after so much driving. Ate some homemade pasta (dope food for being located in the middle of the jungle) and had a couple of beers whilst we enjoyed the nightly “Panchon Performance” – El Rojo, Maya Bell’s resident hippie (imagine a red haired, Spanish speaking Santa Claus), playing Buena Vista Social Club covers Mexi-Reggae style and fire dancers.
